Engineers sometimes introduce extra head loss as a safety factor to account for additional losses that are unaccounted for via other means. This ensures that the residual pressure remains sufficient under worst-case conditions.
The Custom Loss feature allows users to manually define this extra lumped head loss at any node. The entered value is then added directly to the pipe’s head loss calculation.

Calculation #
The total head loss of a pipe is calculated as:

Head Loss of Pipe 1 = Frictional Loss + Custom head loss Node 1 + Custom head loss Node 2
= 1.395 + 0.3 + 0.5
= 2.195m
Head Loss of Pipe 2 = Frictional Loss + Custom head loss Node 2 + Custom head loss Node 3
= 0.168 + 0.5 + 0.0
= 0.668m
