How to Resolve Overlap Between Boundary and Platform?

Estimated: 2 min read

The Error Message #

While designing platforms that are located within a boundary, users may encounter an error mentioning that the boundary overlaps with the platform as shown in the image below.

Users may check the error at the Verification Tab located at the bottom grid of the UI. Do note that in some versions of the software, specifically MiTS 3.3 and below, the error will only appear after the slope is attempted to be generated.

Why is the software throwing overlapping error? #

If we take a closer look at the involved edges of the boundary and platform, there is no sign of overlapping- The vertices along the edges appear visually snapped or aligned to the same exact point coordinates.

The 'snapped' corners between the boundary and platform

However, if we scrutinize the point coordinates, by following the Step2: Checking the point coordinates of the boundary and platform below, we will observe the coordinates of the corners are nearly identical– but they are not sharing the same points- which causes the edges to be slightly offset and flagged as overlapping by the software.

Steps to Resolve #

Sample Project file: Click here

Note: The project file above can only be opened in the latest MiTS 3.3.66.0 and above.

In MiTS 3.3 and below #

Step 1: Identifying the involved platform and boundary

  1. In the MiTS project file, go to the Verification Tab located at the bottom grid of the UI. The verification error, "Boundary [BoundaryMark] intersects with platform [PlatformMark] will be listed.

Example of the verification message based on sample project

  1. Double-click on the error message and the software will higlight the “problematic platform” that is overlapping with the boundary.

Step 2: Checking the point coordinates of the boundary and platform

  1. For the highlighted “problematic platform”, click on the ‘…’ button under the Points column of the Platform Spread Input.

Points column under Platform Spread Input

  1. Software will open up a Points Editor dialog, which will display the point coordinates of each corner in ascending manner (C1–>C2–>C3–>C4).

Platform Point Editor dialog

  1. Observe the involved corners. Based on the sample project file given, for the platform, the involved corners are C1 and C4.

C1 & C4 of platform

  1. As for the boundary, navigate to Boundary Spread Input by going to Input tab and clicking on Boundary. Under the Spread Input, select the boundary involved.

Boundary Spread Input

  1. Navigate to the RHS Properties Grid of the selected boundary and click on the ‘…’ button to display the Points Editor dialog. Similarly, the points coordinates displayed will be in ascending manner.

Displaying Boundary Points Editor dialog

  1. Observed the involved corners. Based on the sample project file given, for the platform, the involved corners are 20 and 21.

Corner 20 & 21 of boundary

Step 3: Resolving overlapping by adjusting platform or boundary point coordinates

Based on the sample file above;

Platform Boundary
C1 coordinates:

X= 400.245000
Y= 197.925000
Z= 32.800000
Corner 21 coordinates:

X= 400.245000
Y= 197.925000
Z= 0.000000
C4 Coordinates:

X= 402.455000
Y= 182.845000
Z= 32.800000
Corner 20 coordinates:

X= 402.447070
Y= 182.843842
Z= 0.000000

  1. C1 of platform and Corner 21 of boundary have the same exact X and Y coordinate points- this is an indicator that the overlapping are not triggered by these two corners.

  2. As for C4 of platform, the X and Y point coordinates are only close enough but not exactly snapped to the Corner 20 of boundary.

  3. To resolve the overlapping, it requires users to adjust the X and Y coordinate points of the C4 for platform OR Corner 20 for boundary to be identical to each other.

In MiTS 3.4 and above #

In our latest MiTS 3.4 (version 3.4.18.0 and above), AutoFix has been implemented to assist users in resolving overlapping involving boundary and platforms.

In these versions, the guided steps above will be done automatically by the software. Therefore, users only need to navigate to

Verification Tab > Right-click on the error message > Resolve Boundary Intersection

Right clicking on verification error

OR

Verification Tab > Click on AutoFix button > Click OK
