A Mass Haul Diagram plots the cumulative cut and fill volume of a road against its chainage. It’s the standard way to plan earthwork haulage — where material needs to be moved from (cut) and to (fill), and how far — without having to read it off the raw cut and fill numbers station by station.
Note: The Mass-Haul Diagram is one the latest feature for Road & Highway Module, available in MiTS 3.4 and above.
Opening the diagram #
To generate the Mass-Haul Diagram,
navigate to Road & Highway Module > Output Tab > Click on Mass Haul Diagram button

The Mass-Haul Diagram shares its underlying calculation with the Road End Area Report, where both buttons go through the same confirmation dialog first, allowing users to review or edit excluded chainage sections and each road’s Starting Baseline before generating the diagram (or the report).

Mass Haul Settings #
With the Mass Haul Diagram tab open, its settings appear in the Mass Haul Settings and Properties panel on the right-hand side.
Road #
- Starting baseline (m³) — This setting is available in the right-hand side Properties panel, under the Chainage Settings (per road basis) section. It is the cumulative volume carried into the selected road’s first station. Users may apply this when the road’s earthwork continues on from material already moved elsewhere (e.g. from an earlier phase, or an adjoining road), so the diagram’s curve — and the End Area Report’s Cumulative Net Volume and Summary figures — start from the correct running total instead of zero. This value is per road, and the same value appears in the Road End Area Report’s own settings.

Mass Haul #
The parameters below are located in the right-hand side Mass Haul Settings panel.
-
Volume scale (m³ per drawing mm) — how much cumulative volume one vertical millimetre of the drawing represents. A larger value compresses the curve vertically; a smaller value stretches it.
-
Grid volume spacing (m³) — the cumulative-volume difference between adjacent horizontal grid lines, i.e. how finely the volume axis is graduated.

Keeping the End Area Report consistent #
Because the Mass Haul diagram and the Road End Area Report read the same Starting Baseline, the End Area Report’s Summary tab includes a “Starting Baseline Volume” row (the sum of every included road’s baseline) and folds it into the Export/Import total — so the Summary stays consistent with each road’s detail-calculation tab, whose Cumulative Net Volume already starts from that baseline. You can also review and edit each road’s Starting Baseline directly from the End Area Report tab, via its own End Area Report Settings panel on the right-hand side.
