Road : Calculation of Verge Slope Ratio

There are some changes in MiTS 3 when it comes to the calculation of the verge slope ratio

MiTS 1/MES Module: Road

Go to:

> Cross Section Detailing

As shown above, the verge slope is 1:3.4.

Go to:

Options >> Parameters >> Analysis >> Design

As stated above, the verge slope is at 25% which supposedly gives out the ratio in the cross section detailing at the verge of 1:4.

Explanation:

  1. The verge slope ratio at the cross section is calculated cumulatively from the edge of the carriageway which includes the shoulder slope and verge slope as the edge of the carriageway is considered as the reference point.

     2. In this case, the shoulder cross slope and verge slope are set at 4% and 25%, respectively.

  1. Therefore, it is calculated by totalling the shoulder cross slope and verge slope (4+25) which gives out 29% equals to ratio of 1:3.4.

MiTS 2

MiTS 2 has 2 ways of calculating the verge slope ratio. The first one is similar to MiTS 1’s verge slope ratio calculation, which includes the shoulder slope ratio. However, you must untick ‘Verge & shoulder Independent’ in the project parameters for this verge slope ratio calculation to be activated.

Go to:

Options > Project Parameters > Road > Design > Road Width

Untick = 25% + 4% = 29% = 1:3.4

The second verge slope calculation is simple. It will just follow the value that you set in the project parameters when you tick the ‘Verge & shoulder slope Independent’.

Tick = 25% = 1:4

MiTS 3

The MiTS 3 verge slope calculation is similar to the second method used in MiTS 2 for determining the verge slope ratio. It will follow the value you set in the Properties tab in the RHS panel or the project settings. Note that the method “the verge slope is dependent on the shoulder” is removed.

Go to:

Input > Road Width > Spread Input > Verge > RHS Panel > Properties > Cross Slope, %

Using the Properties tab in the RHS panel

Go to:

Options > Project Settings > Road > Design > Road Width > BuiltIn Element Editor

Using BuiltIn Element Editor in the Project Settings

If you notice, there is also a Custom Element Editor other than the BuiltIn Element Editor. You can follow these blog posts for more info on the Custom Element Editor and the comparison between the BuiltIn Element Editor and Custom Element Editor.
