Synopsis:
The workshop introduces participants to the application of the latest urban drainage design procedure gazetted by the Government in 2012-the “ Urban Stormwater Management Manual for Malaysia ” @ MSMA 2nd Edition published by the Department of Irrigation and Drainage (DID). Design theories and calculation of MSMA 2nd Edition will be covered by REDAC, USM, the main contributor for MSMA 2nd Edition in this workshop. Also, the workshop provides C&S consultants an insight on how the latest civil software applications can improve and simplify the design process. Topics that will be elaborated include Design Rainfall & Runoff Estimation, OSD Design and Detention Pond Design base on MSMA 2nd Edition.

Prof. Dr. Nor Azazi Zakaria has served in Universiti Sains Malaysia since 1994 and received his Ph.D. in December 1994 with specializing in Soil Reinforcement over Supersoft Soils. He then established the River Engineering and Urban Drainage Research Centre (REDAC) in 2001 and has since remained as the director. His main research interests are Sustainable Urban Drainage Systems, Environmental Impact Assessment and Environmental Management Plan, Soil Improvement Techniques, Soil Reinforcement and Site Investigation. Dr. Nor Azazi is the leading researcher in the innovation of Bio-ecological Drainage System (BIOECODS), and is now an established figure in the field of stormwater management at national and international levels. He sits in the Executive Committee for Malaysian National Committee on Irrigation and Drainage (MANCID) and Malaysia Stormwater Organization (MSO), as well as editorial board of established international journal. As a main contributor for MSMA 2nd edition, he has actively participated at national level in promoting this new urban drainage manual.
B.Eng (Hons.) (Civil), MSc, PhD
Dr. Lau Tze Liang is a senior lecturer at the School of Civil Engineering and Research Associate at River Engineering and Urban Drainage Research Centre (REDAC), Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) since 2004. He graduated from Universiti Sains Malaysia with a Bachelor of Engineering in Civil Engineering in 1999. He then joined REDAC as a Research Officer until December 2003. He obtained his MSc and PhD in 2001 and 2009.
He has undertaken a number of research and consultancy projects in the discipline of river engineering and urban stormwater management. Among these projects are feasibility study for flood mitigation and drainage improvement, drainage system design for new development, study on gross pollutant traps and sustainable urban drainage. He has published technical papers in international and national conferences and journals.
B.Eng. (Hons) in Civil Engineering (USM),
M.Sc. in River and Urban Drainage Management (USM)
Engr. Chang Chun Kiat is one of the Science Officers in REDAC, USM since 2002. His main research interests are sediment transport in river, integrated river basin management and urban drainage management. He has experience in research and consultancy projects such as drainage improvement and flood mitigation projects, sediment transport modeling study, as well as application of Sustainable Urban Drainage Systems (SUDS) and Bio-Ecological Drainage System (BIOECODS). Mr. Chang is also a member of Certified Professional in Erosion and Sediment Control (CPESC) since 2008. Besides, he is one of the contributors for MSMA 2nd edition.
- Eng. (Hons) in Civil Engineering (USM)
Engr. Leow Cheng Siang joined REDAC, USM since September 2006 as a Research Officer. His scope of work is mainly as a hydrological and hydraulic computer modeller for urban drainage. Apart from this, he also obtains relevant exposure and knowledge in Geography Information System (GIS) and its application in the field of river engineering and urban drainage. His main research interest is the application of Sustainable Urban Drainage Systems (SUDS) in Malaysia to promote rehabilitation and restoration of nature environment within urban development. To date, he has participated in several stormwater drainage master plan studies, as well as detailed designs. Mr. Leow is also a member of Certified Professional in Erosion and Sediment Control (CPESC) since 2008. He is one of the contributors for MSMA 2nd edition as well.
